There are 56 ethnic minorities in Thailand, most of whom migrated from China through Myanmar and Laos to Thailand. These groups would remain in the border areas, waiting to settle in mainland Thailand until the political timing allowed. However, those who did not have the means to purchase land would gather in the mountains and settle there instead. Initially, these villages consisted of 5-20 families, but now, some villages have grown to 80-100 families.
Mae Wang Church is a local Thai church in the city of Chiang Mai, focused on pioneering ministries among ethnic minorities in the mountain villages of Thailand. Through Mae Wang Church, 10 ethnic minority churches have been planted. In addition, one of the church’s main ministries is a dormitory for children who need to leave their families to attend school in the city as the smaller villages have no schools. If they do not stay in the church’s dormitory, the only other alternative is staying in Buddhist temples.
