Caring for the Forgotten: How Churches in Zambia Are Changing Lives

Forgotten Voices Zambia was born out of a reality many pastors face every day. After graduating from theological college and stepping into ministry, church leaders quickly realize that the needs in their communities go far beyond Sunday services.

In Zambia, where nearly 1 in 7 children is orphaned, pastors are often confronted with overwhelming physical and emotional needs alongside spiritual ones. Many churches are already stretched thin, leaving vulnerable children and struggling families without support. Too often, children are forced to look elsewhere for help, sometimes compromising their faith and stability simply to survive.

Forgotten Voices Zambia was created to walk alongside local churches, helping them care for orphaned and vulnerable children in practical, sustainable ways while strengthening the role of the church within the community.

What this means today

Today, Forgotten Voices Zambia partners with churches to provide customized support for children and families, focusing on education, parenting, mental health, and economic empowerment. While Zambia technically offers “free education,” families are still responsible for uniforms, books, school supplies, shoes, and transportation, costs many vulnerable households simply cannot afford.

Through Forgotten Voices Zambia, children receive the supplies they need to remain in school, while families are equipped with small grants to begin income-generating projects like backyard gardening or reselling food items.

One student, Phyllis, overcame incredible challenges through this support system and went on to achieve some of the highest scores on her senior secondary exams. Today, she is pursuing her dream of attending university.

How you can get involved

In 2025 alone, Forgotten Voices Zambia has already supported 102 children with school assistance and 98 families through small sustainability grants across seven church communities. But the vision is even bigger. Their goal is to train 10 church partners and expand support to at least 900 children, ensuring more families can put food on the table and more children can stay in school. They also hope to equip church leaders through trauma-informed orphan care training, helping communities respond with wisdom, dignity, and long-term care.
