Caring for the Forgotten: How Churches in Zambia Are Changing Lives
The School of Peace provides Gaza refugee children with education, daily meals and a safe space to heal, helping restore
In 2018, Ron and Susan Bonomo launched BCOM- Blessing Cameroon Orphans Ministry. Ron, who served many years in the US military was deployed when he met Orel, also deployed in the US military and originally from Cameroon. As the men got to know one another, Ron learned that Orel had a close friend serving with orphans in Cameroon. Intrigued, as he and Susan had been feeling a strong desire by this point to work with orphans, he wanted to learn more. Over many conversations, learning more and more about Annie and her work, Ron and Susan started BCOM.
Annie lost her parents at a young age and became both mother and father to her brothers. She understands the emotional, physical and spiritual suffering of the children she serves. She oversees the distribution of monthly donations of food and funds to the respective orphanages as well as monthly visits and is in charge of the food distribution. The distribution includes food, water, and cooking essentials. During each visit the ministry team, led by Annie, spends time with the children. They help with homework, cleaning, cooking and personal care. Most children arrived at the orphanages through social services having been abandoned by their biological parents at birth or having fled their homes because of abuse or conflict in the region.
BCOM now supports 5 orphanages and approximately 125 orphans. Along with food distribution and the monthly visits, they provide individual birthday cakes for each sponsored child. Their love and care also includes an annual Christmas Party which will be happening very soon! The children eat, play and dance with one another, and the love of Jesus is shared with them. Many who have known only sadness, loneliness and hunger find hope and joy.
These are some of the ways that the Blessing Cameroon Orphans Ministry is living out the charge given by Jesus in Matthew 19:14: “I want little children to come to me, so never interfere with them when they want to come, for heaven’s kingdom realm is composed of beloved ones like these!”
As we celebrate the season. Remember the children.
